P.s. Many Local Polys were used recently on Off the Map to play South Americans...

Comment by Jeffrey Ah Sam on March 11, 2012 at 8:36am

When it comes to Playing the role of a polynesian person, Hollywood doesn't really always go for accuracy ... Take for instance... The Princess Ka'iulani movie.. the actress was not even from Hawai'i... she was from south america...  When Hollywood made a movie about Greg Louganis who is Samoan/European, Mario Lopez who is Latino played that role...

I'd say at least be happy that if Dwayne Johnson were to land the role  of a Hawaiian king, at least he's a Polynesian and not another Latino... Not hat there's anything wrong with them.. I'm just sayin. Otherwise, write your own movie.. cast your own actors..  Have a great sunday

Aloha Mai Kakou,

Intriguing conversation concerning the casting of Kamehameha. I think Mr. Johnson would make a compelling Kamehameha and would draw a lot of international interest to the film but historically speaking, aside from his physical strength, Mr. Johnson lacks the intensity of facial features and the towering and imposing stature of the late great Mo'i nui.

Additionally, I might add, greater polynesia has been a melting pot of pacific rim cultures for millennia. Hawaiian oral tradition describe many different races visiting and or settling in the Hawaiian archipelago; originating from as far away as Europe, Japan, Malaysia, Micro and Melanesia, Pacific Northwest, and South America there is much debate concerning the origins of Pa'ao and Pili. Many contemporary scholars believe they arrived here from the Society Islands or Tahiti, regardless it is my humble opinion that the physical appearance of the actor playing the role should take precedence over the race of the individual. It would be wonderful if the Actor was of Hawaiian or Polynesian descent but it should not be a prerequisite or deciding factor in casting the part.

If not Kamehameha, Mr. Johnson would make an excellent rival as Keoua(the younger) or loyal subordinate as Ke'eamoku

-peace

And besides, Pa'ao and Pili came at a time about 30 generations before Kamehameha. A time where I have previously argued that Polynesians were all one people anyway.  Therefore, I have no problem with the Rock playing Kamehameha. In fact, I endorse it.  Whatever brings truth to light about our people and history I am all for.  Truth.

Are you referring to the genealogy layout in the book entitled, "Myths and Legends of Hawaii" Which until recently was followed with, "The Fables and Folk-Lore of a Strange People."  Yeah I am sure Kalakaua would write a book and call his own "strange people."  There were many contributing authors in this volume, many of them white men.  And let's not forget, the book is titled, "Myths and Legends" and not, "Facts."  Every Hawaiian historian of that time period has Pa'ao coming from Samoa and establishing a priestly line.  He brought with him human sacrifice and the high chief Pili, who hailed from Tahiti.  Do not believe everything you read online.  Do the research yourself.  There are many books I can give you that say it directly.  Like I said before, email me personally and I can send you directly to the authorities on this subject.  Let's not waste any more posts on subjects you do not know about people...Excuse me for being blunt, but let's leave Hawaiian genealogy to the Hawaiians.  We don't go around telling people who their ancestors were and we appreciate the same respect.  Malama pono.

Dewayne Johnson would definitely be ideal for this role. If not the great king, at least an ali'i against the island u unification.
Comment by Lucky Ito on March 7, 2012 at 12:09am
Very controversial subject. So many stories regarding Kamehameha's history. According to King Kalakaua's genealogy layout, King Kamehameha's lineage is from Samoa (Pili & Pa'oa)

After hearing this from a king, I was amazed, but even he can be wrong.
Comment by Jordan Naihe on March 6, 2012 at 9:18pm

If I may--Kamehameha's lineage is no secret.  Rank, for the most part, was a birthright.  Kamehameha's lineage goes directly back to the ali'i of settlers from Tahiti that first established the rank system some 1500 years ago-the Ulu and Nanaulu bloodlines. If there are those of you who are referring to Samoan blood ties over 1500 years ago, then yes.  If there are those of you who are referring to a Samoan bloodline within the Hawaiian ruling class within the past 1500 years, then no that is not accurate.  All of it is in our history that has been passed down for over a thousand years.  It is no mystery to us Native Hawaiians as to who our ali'i were or where they came from!  Or where we come from! If you have any more questions about this, I can refer you to a Native Hawaiian genealogist who is also a professor at UH Manoa's school of Hawaiian Studies and they can clear that up for any who wish to do any further research....I hope this clears up a lot of confusion.  God bless...
