ACM is offering a new SMART co-Lab this year through the Looking China Youth Film Project offered by Beijing Normal University. Program dates are July 4-21, and the program will be held in Beijing, China.

Up to three ACM students will be selected as part of a student group of about 10 students from ACM UHM, VCA School of Film & Television at the University of Melbourne, and Media, Film and Television at Auckland University and accompanied by a staff or faculty member. Each student will be paired with a Chinese facilitator and be provided production support and guidance to produce a 10-minute documentary on this year’s Chinese cultural theme: CRAFTSMANSHIP, INHERITENCE, AND INNOVATION. Individual subjects must be approved by the producer, and the program will retain copyright, but students will be allowed to enter their films into film festivals.

The LOOKING CHINA program will cover the key expenses of the trip, including roundtrip airfare and lodging, as well as a small per diem. Students should plan for an out of pocket expense of approximately $500 to cover their individual portion of miscellaneous expenses such as travel insurance and a China visa application fee. Students must also provide their own laptop with editing software and a video camera (DSLR and ILC cameras are acceptable).

For more information, please download the below program brochure, or visit the program website at

Disney, Marvel head to Hawaii to film ‘Marvel: The Inhumans’ IMAX movie and TV series

Disney, Marvel Studios and IMAX are planning to develop a headquarters for Marvel’s next major project — a feature film and ABC television series “Marvels The Inhumans” — in a former Navy facility in Hawaii, the head of the state’s film commission confirmed to Pacific Business News this week.

The entire production is expected to create hundreds of jobs in the Isle film industry as well as pump between $80 million and $100 million annually into the state’s economy, rivaling and even surpassing such Hawaii-filmed TV series such as ABC’s “Lost,” and CBS’ current series “Hawaii Five-0.”

Auditions: ‘The Miracle Worker’ at Aloha Performing Arts Company, 2/28 & 3/1

Aloha Performing Arts Company will hold open auditions for volunteer actors for the classic American drama  "The Miracle Worker" beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 28 and March 1. Actors interested in the roles of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller should come at 6:00 p.m. and all others should arrive by 6:30 p.m.  Candidates for Helen will be excused early.  An invitational callback audition may be held on Thursday, March 2, also at 6:00 p.m.   All audition sessions will be held at the historic Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, where the show will be performed May 5-21.  Five male and six female actors are needed for principal roles, as well as six female extras and some offstage voices.  Those auditioning need to arrive promptly, wear close-toed shoes, and expect to stay for at least two hours.  Rehearsal for some principal characters will begin immediately, and full cast rehearsals will commence later in March. Rehearsals will generally be conducted Monday through Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons.  The complete rehearsal and performance calendar will be posted at auditions. Though all cast members will not be required at every rehearsal, candidates need to be available for the entire rehearsal period with a minimum number of conflicts, and must commit to the entire performance run.  Jerry Tracy is directing, assisted by Felicity Johnson. Juanita Finkenberg will serve as movement director, Jeannie Kutsunai as the sign language consultant, and producers are Joel Michaelson and Karen Barry.

All roles are available, and include: a doctor, an adult of any age; Helen Keller, a young girl, deaf and blind; Kate Keller, Helen's mother; Captain Keller, Helen's father; Annie Sullivan, Helen's young teacher; James Keller, a young man; Anagnos, a school administrator with a Greek accent; Viney, a servant, ideally a person of color; Martha and Percy, a young girl and boy, ideally persons of color; several blind schoolmates of Annie; and several offstage voices.

'The Miracle Worker" is by William Gibson, adapted from his 1957 "Playhouse 90" teleplay of the same name.  It chronicles a pivotal time in the young Helen Keller's development.  The late Anne Bancroft and the late Patty Duke created the roles of Annie Sullivan and Helen on Broadway in 1960.  That production won four Tony Awards, including Best Play.  The two stars reunited for the highly acclaimed 1962 film adaptation. Bancroft won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and Patty Duke won for Best Supporting Actress.  The play is set in the 1880's in and around the Keller homestead in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and also, briefly, at the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston.  Scripts are available for onsite perusal or checkout in exchange for a deposit by arrangement with APAC Managing Director Melissa Geiger.  For more information or to request a script, call 322-9924.
